Summary

The International Energy Agency is an autonomous body established in November 1974 within the framework of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to carry out research in non-petroliferous energy fields. That part of the IEA involved with studies of coal as an energy source is based in London, England.

Two of the five internal departments (or Services) of IEA Coal Research are heavily committed to utilising data banks and data banking systems. The first of these, the Technical Information Service (TIS) is involved in banking bibliographic data whereas the second, the World Resources and Reserves Data Bank Service (RRS) is banking quantitative data on world coal deposits. Both TIS and RRS have carried out design studies on available data management systems and concluded that ASSASSIN and MRDS software best met their respective requirements.
