Summary

Documentation is an essential activity of international scientific unions. In IUGS the first documentation activity was the International Stratigraphic Lexicon. Efforts of the IUGS Committee on Geological Documentation have been successful in establishing a network of information exchange between the main documentation centres in the world, in coordinating a Multilingual Thesaurus for Geology, and, to a minor degree, in the production of critical compilations. The IUGS Committee on Storage, Automatic Processing and Retrieval of Geological Data has developed essential activity in establishing standards to promote consistency in records of geological data and in testing practicability of new techniques.
