Abstract
Trauma and cancer are perhaps two outstanding problems left for Medicine to solve. The day may come when the same rigorous apparatus of enquiry is applied to the causes and prevention of trauma as had been deployed for the problems of heart disease and specific infections. Until then there will be a steadily increasing number of people of all ages and occupations who suffer incapacity through injury.
