Abstract

The periodontal ligament is the connective tissue which unites the root of the tooth to the thin thimble of bone which forms the socket. Normal biting loads on a human tooth are in the order of 10 to 50 N, and are applied with a rise time of some 100 ms; the interval between chews being approximately 400 ms.
