Abstract

Mechanical properties of blood vessels are studied using simple elongation tests. Ninety circumferential and 110 longitudinal strips taken from 13 rat and 7 pig thoracic and abdominal aortas are tested. The average stress-strain curves for circumferential and longitudinal strips are plotted. From the dimension changes in the transverse direction of the strips, two sets of transverse strain curves are plotted for both circumferential and longitudinal directions. From the stress-strain curves, secant elastic modules for both circumferential and longitudinal directions are computed and their variations with the axial strain level are given. Similarly, four secant Poisson’s ratios are computed from transverse strain curves and their variations with the axial strain level are given.
