Abstract
The most important aspects of any analytical method are the steps taken to ensure the quality of the results. Quality assurance is the system of activities whose purpose is to provide assurance that the overall quality control limits are being met (Taylor 1981). The quality control limits (established by the analytical laboratory, or an outside organization) define the expected accuracy and precision of the results. Quality assurance must cover all aspects of the analytical process, from sampling, through sample treatment, standards preparation, and method validation, to the data handling and evaluation. Without a defined quality assurance program, all analytical results must be suspect.
