Abstract
The Food Additives Amendment of 1958 (72 Stat. 1785) has been codified as Section 348 in Title 21 of the United States Code. It was amended and became part of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to provide authority and procedures for allowing, disallowing or regulating the use of substances which may become components of food. The main purpose of the amendment is to ensure safety of the components of food which are covered only generally by provisions of Section 346 (tolerances for poisonous ingredients in food), and are not included under the Pesticide Chemicals Amendment at Section 346a, or in the Color Additive Amendments of 1960 at Section 376.
