The Geology of Some Atlantic Abyssal Plains and the Engineering Implications

Offshore Site Investigation

Abstract

Studies of a number of Atlantic abyssal plains in relation to a feasibility study on the sub-seabed disposal of radioactive waste have shown that sedimentation in abyssal plains is caused by various sediment transport mechanisms. The eastern North Atlantic Madeira Abyssal Plain and the western North Atlantic Nares Abyssal Plain may serve as examples of the resulting widely differing sedimentary patterns. An understanding of these patterns is a basis for a successful site investigation in an abyssal plain setting.
