Abstract

The best possible evaluation of the relevant geotechnical parameters is essential for the adequate and economic design of all major structures. The large-scale in situ properties of the ground depend on the nature of the source material, the effects of geological processes, environmental conditions, and the stresses to which the ground has been subjected. All these factors are reflected in the in situ geotechnical properties and the soil fabric features at scales from the micro to the massive which can be present in the ground. Parameters relevant in a particular foundation design are also a function of the nature, level and orientation of the loadings and the length of time for which they are applied.
