Abstract

The gasification of coal is currently the subject of intense development activity. It is widely anticipated that a considerable proportion of the coal consumed in the future, as at certain periods of the past, will first be converted into gases. Motivations for this conversion may include (a) the greater convenience of gaseous fuels compared with solids, (b) the possibility of beneficial changes in environmental impact and (c) possible improvements in the efficiency of use from coal through to final consumption. However, more generally in the recent past, a major objective has been the production on a large scale of Substitute Natural Gas (SNG).
