Abstract

The medium and long term potential prospects for coal emerge rather clearly:

  1. (a)

Coal output is capable of increasing, preferably in a regular and steady fashion, with a doubling time of about 20–25 years, continuing over the next 40–50 years at least.

  2. (b)

This coal should be used in ways which are complementary to the progressive decline of natural gas and oil and to the growing availability of new energy sources.

  3. (c)

These developments will put strains on availability, technology and capital; all these will best be alleviated by international collaboration.
