Abstract
The main nutritional disorders of the industrially underdeveloped countries are those of protein/energy inadequacy. Vitamin deficiencies coexist but within the framework of the florid states of starvation are usually, relatively speaking, of secondary importance. Hence the clinical picture that is seen is classically a mixed one, and correction of the protein/energy deficit must be the prime consideration. However, this does not justify not paying adequate attention to the concomitant vitamin deficiency, for as the protein/energy nutritional state improves so the vitamin deficiency assumes a greater importance.
