Abstract
Folic acid is the parent compound (pteroylglutamic acid — PGA — Figure 35) of a group of several naturally occurring compounds with similar activity designated by the group name folacin. It is a combination of the pteridine nucleus, p-amino benzoic acid and glutamic acid. Replacement of the glutamic acid destroys the vitamin activity. It is stable to heat in neutral and alkaline solution, but unstable in acid solution and to light.
