Abstract

It is indeed an honor to be the first speaker of this symposium, and I would like to compliment our friends from Cagliari on having taken the initiative to, and carried the organizational burden of, what looks like a promising enterprise. Lithium has been dealt with at four symposia earlier this summer, on “Effects of Lithium and Antidepressant Treatment”, on “Lithium Transport Research”, on “Lithium Withdrawal Studies”, and on “Trace Metals”. The present symposium focuses on uses of lithium and rubidium in the treatment of illness, and I am particularly eager to learn the latest about rubidium as a therapeutic agent, a subject associated with many rumors but relatively few published studies.
