Abstract
The symptoms acute cardiac failure are acute breathlessness, at rest or with effort, and it may occur in bed at night (paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnoea) waking the patient from sleep and causing him to sit up or get up and go to an open window for air. Orthopnoea, or breathlessness lying flat, is another symptom and may be noticed when the patient slides down from his pillows.
