Abstract

As a result of increased knowledge in neonatal-perinatal medicine, there has been a progressive reduction in the neonatal mortality rate in the last 30 years. In the United States as a whole, the neonatal mortality rate has been reduced from 12.3/1000 live births in 1974 to 9.9/1000 live births in 1977. Although the United States ranks 16th in the world with respect to the neonatal mortality rate, it has the lowest birthweight-specific neonatal mortality rate in the world.
