Abstract
Two kinds of theories can provide some useful background for understanding why the daughter’s awareness of her similarity to her mother profoundly affects their relationship. One, derived from social psychology, concerns the way the daughter-mother pair belongs to, overlaps and is excluded from various groups. The other, from developmental psychology, concerns the daughter’s identification with her mother. The parts of these theories that are relevant to this book are presented in the following sections.
