Abstract
There are various reasons why a consideration of the breast by doctors who are caring for women in the middle years is important. The great psychological importance to the woman herself is one factor. As with the endometrium, it is a site of origin of oestrogen dependent cancer, but, whereas study of the endometrium is made relatively simple by ease of access, the exact state of a breast is, as yet, quite unable to be determined without mastectomy. The relationship between hormonal therapy and breast cancer can, therefore, only be determined by very large epidemiological studies. Benign breast disease can cause great distress to a woman, either symptomatically or because of the need for surgery to exclude malignancy. It also is a predisposing factor to breast cancer. These are the aspects which were considered in this workshop, and, as was feared, more questions were asked than could be answered.
