Psycho-sexual aspects of mid-life

  • Chapter
The Controversial Climacteric

Abstract

The second half of the last decade saw the development of two rather new and distinct kinds of literature on the problems encountered by women in mid-life. One featured papers, mainly by medical people, which tended to link psycho-sexual problems, such as dryness and soreness of the vagina, dyspareunia, and decreased libido, with endocrinologically determined changes in the sexual organs (van Keep and Gregory, 1977; Lauritzen and Müller, 1977; Musaph and Haspels, 1977; Haspels and Musaph, 1979). The other focused on the influence of psycho-social factors, on the problems encountered by the peri-menopausal woman within her family, and within her cultural setting (Flint, 1975; Maoz et al., 1978).
