Abstract
Attempts to prophesy what will happen in future invite ridicule, since no-one can anticipate the discoveries that are going to be made. Nevertheless, it is useful to hypothesize developments which could happen in the light of present knowledge. We can also extrapolate present trends, since these can be expected to give a reasonably accurate guide to the near future and some guide to the more distant future.
