Abstract

The production of humoral substances by tumors is common and may even be a universal concomitant to neoplasia. Tumors derived from endocrine glands may produce hormone immunochemically identical to the normal hormone and these hormones can be biologically active or nonfunctional. Carcinoma of the adrenal gland, for example, is associated with Cushing’s syndrome in only 50 percent of patients while malignant parathyroid tumors are almost always functional (Table 19.1). Endocrine tumors are often benign and may be asymptomatic and nonfunctional, while the malignant tumors often retain the functional capacity of the gland and present with typical features of excess hormone production.
