Abstract
The term ‘toxaemias of pregnancy’ was originally used to include a heterogeneous collection of conditions, all of which had an obscure aetiology. Thus included under this heading were various skin rashes, hyperemesis, polyneuritis and ptyalism (excessive salivation) of pregnancy. Today the term’ toxaemia’ is used by most authorities to include the states of pre-eclampsia, essential hypertension and the chronic nephritis group of illnesses (for the latter see page 63).
