Abstract

Few topics provoke more discussion than the relationship between exogenous estrogens and endometrial carcinoma, and the recent publication in America of retrospective studies reporting an increase in the risk ratio for cancer following prolonged estrogen therapy1–6 has further fuelled this controversy. The statistical, clinical and pathological biases and inadequacies of this type of investigation have been discussed extensively7–11, but it is highly unlikely that the reported relationship is spurious12.
