Abstract
Cardiac murmurs will be noticed at routine medical examinations, e.g. for life insurance, when patients are examined for other reasons and complaints, and when patients present with symptoms of heart disease such as breathlessness due to heart failure, and angina. If murmurs are associated with symptoms, further investigations and a specialist opinion will be necessary. It is essential to determine whether murmurs are significant and organic in origin, or are innocent and of no significance. The loudness of a murmur does not correlate with degree of organic disease. Murmurs must not be ignored but must be diagnosed by the family physician or after specialist referral.
