Abstract
Ulcerative colitis occurs most frequently in white races but is becoming more common in the developing countries of Asia and Africa. All age groups are affected. The prevalence in Britain is approximately one per 1200 of the population. There is an undoubtedly increased incidence in some families but it is not known whether the predisposition is genetic or environmental.
