Abstract

A renal transplant was first performed between identical twins by Merrill and colleagues in 1956; there are now 2300 transplants per year in Europe(EDTA). The following are specific terms used in transplantation:

  1. (1)

Autograft is when the organ comes from the same individual from which it was removed.

  2. (2)

Isograft is when the donor is of the same genotype, as when twins exchange an organ.

  3. (3)

Allograft is when the donor is of the same species, but a different genotype.

  4. (4)

Xenograft refers to donation of an organ from a different species. Most renal transplant kidneys are, therefore, allografts.
