Abstract
The mechanism by which the small intestinal epithelial cells absorb the products of intraluminal dietary fat digestion and transform them into secretory particles (chylomicrons) has intrigued physiologists and morphologists for over 100 years. Although the general features of lipid transport into the intracellular compartment of the small intestinal absorptive cells and the subsequent appearance of chylomicrons in the lymph were evident from light microscopic studies it required the development of electron microscopy and its utilization in correlative biochemical studies to elucidate the intimate details of the absorptive process.
