Abstract

In recent years there has been considerable interest in the structure of cell membranes. The older concept of a cell membrane consisting of a lipid bilayer sandwiched by protein has been critically examined and modified. The present idea retains the lipid bilayer but the position of the protein is more variable. In some membranes the proteins are inserted into the lipid core, sometimes spanning the membrane (Bretscher, 1971) whilst in other membranes the proteins are on the external faces. In certain instances the proteins are predominantly on the inner face of the cell membrane, i.e. there is an asymmetry of protein distribution.
