Abstract
There can be no doubt about the size of the commitment which looms before all advanced societies in providing medical care for old people both now and throughout the rest of this century. Individual statistics in all the chapters provide sufficient evidence of this. The need, therefore, is to try and discern which among the various approaches seems to offer the best results, both in terms of value for money and also in the humanity of the care provided.
