Abstract

The Netherlands belong to those industrialised countries of Europe, North America and Australia which have a relatively high percentage of people 65 years of age and over (the so-called ‘old people’). In all these ‘western’ countries this percentage is ten or more. Besides being industrialised these countries are characterised by rapid urbanisation, increased bureaucracy, automatisation and often miniaturisation of working activities. These aspects of technological development, changes in ethics and the greater emphasis on youth together with an increase in the percentage of ‘old people’ have led in all western countries to the so-called ‘problem of the aged’. Whether there really exists such a problem, or whether it is as great a problem as some authors try to make us believe needs to be questioned. If there is such a real problem, it has arisen in the present century when society has focused its interest on the younger section of the population.
