Abstract

The last 20 years has seen major advances in the treatment of psychiatric disorders and to a great extent their progress is the result of the remarkable achievements in the field of psychotropic drugs. Before 1950 the number of drugs available for the treatment of the mentally ill was small and even among these, efficacy was not great. At the present time the medical practitioner is provided with an immense and bewildering range of compounds with a varying range of activity.
