Abstract
Sex is one of the basic drives, sometimes called the libido, and is essential for the continuation of the species. A person’s sex is determined by the nature of the genetic material in the fusing gametes, The female contribution is referred to as X and in the diploid state contains XX. The male contribution may be Y or X, because the diploid (46 chromosomes) male cell has both. But at fertilization the gametes are in the haploid (23 chromosomes) state and thus the female always contributes an X and the male X or Y.
