Abstract

To most non-naturalists, anything small and creepy crawly is an insect and this chapter deals with such creatures. In fact the true insects are characterised among other things by having six legs. Spiders and scorpions, for instance, have eight legs and belong to another group but this is hardly something which is likely to bother most people.
