Over 140 species of mammal may be found in the area covered by this guide. Most of them are small, nocturnal, elusive creatures rarely seen by the visitor except in the briefest of glimpses. Most have been little studied by naturalists and not much is known about them. They are of more interest to the professional zoologist than to the ordinary visitor. This section of the guide describes all the mammals which all tourists are reasonably likely to see. Most of them present no problems of identification and more emphasis will be placed on their interesting habits than on details of their anatomical structure. The weights given are only approximate and are those of well-developed adult males. Lifespans are also only very approximate.
