Abstract
This is the vast tract of sparsely inhabited, arid land lying between the fertile coastal strip in the east and the highlands bordering the Rift Valley in the west. To the north it is bounded by the desert. It has been virtually untouched by twentieth century farming or industry. For the visitor its main interest lies in the huge game population it still supports. Tsavo and Meru National Parks and Amboseli Game Reserve lie within this tract.
