Abstract

Not many years ago the increasing effort and ingenuity applied to sea fisheries meant that the marine harvest kept pace with the human population increase. However, in the 1970s the rate of fisheries expansion slowed so that the amount of fish caught per person began to decline (Wheaton, 1977). Estimates of the maximum sustainable yield of food from the sea vary but it is generally thought that 120 million metric tonnes is possible. It has been suggested that increased exploitation of squid (say 10 × 106 t y−1) and of krill (100 × 106 t y−1) might double this yield. Krill first enters the UN Food and Agricultural Organization’s statistics in 1975 and within six years was ranking as the twenty-fifth most important fishery resource (Table 9.1). This chapter does not set out to be a potted fishery text but hopes to promote interest in higher vertebrates as well as fish, harvested invertebrates (including shrimp) and algae in coastal waters.
