Abstract
A mixture of atoms of two or more elements, of which the principal one at least is metallic and which exhibits metallic properties, is known as an alloy. The mechanical and physical properties of the mixture may be appreciably different from those of any one of the constituent pure elements. Because of the great variation of properties obtainable by alloying, alloys are of the greatest importance in engineering; pure metals have a much more restricted use.
