Abstract

It was shown in the preceding chapter by theoretical considerations that the strength of perfect crystals should be very high, of the order of 1000 MPa. It is possible to grow dislocation-free crystals—known as whiskers—which have strengths which approach the theoretical value. However, these are very small, very expensive to produce, and no plant has yet been made for large scale production.
