Abstract

The designer must have a good knowledge of the manufacturing processes used in the production of electronics packaging, the compatibility of the materials used with the processes, and the equipment available for each operation. All materials and processes used have certain restrictions; the designer must be aware of these to avoid the possibility of designing hardware that cannot be manufactured by current standard processes or equipments. A thorough understanding of the fabrication processes enables the designer to select the most economical process and thus is also a means of controlling the costs. This chapter provides some of the basic manufacturing procedures available and the restrictions that must be considered in designing modern electronics equipment that will be manufacturable and salable at competitive prices.
