Abstract
Hooke’s Law states that whenever a body is subjected to an external force, a stress and an accompanying deformation result. When the unit stress does not exceed a certain limit, depending on the material, the ratio between the stress and deformation is constant. If a given weight causes an elongation of 0.001 in. of the carrying member, then doubling the weight will double the elongation.
