Abstract
A rectifier circuit is used to convert ac to dc, and an inverter accomplishes the reverse process. For inverter operation, the power switching devices must have the ability to hold off forward voltage, and the interval of time when conduction occurs must be controllable [1]. The simplest inverters use switching devices which can interrupt the flow of current. Presently, such inverters utilize the bipolar junction transistor (BJT), the field-effect transistor (FET), or the gate-turn-off thyristor (GTO). SCR thyristors are used in the more complicated forced commutated inverters discussed in Chapter 11.
