Abstract

In the Meissner Effect, the diamagnetism that results from superconductivity creates magnetic fields inside of a body that are exactly the same as, but of opposite sign to, those of imposed fields. As a result, the magnetic induction inside a superconducting body is theoretically zero. In actuality, an imposed field does extend into a very thin layer of material at the surface. The magnetic induction in this layer is called the LONDON PENETRATION. The intensity of magnetization varies throughout this layer, being maximum at the surface and falling off exponentially with depth below the surface.
