Abstract

The structure of waveguides that support single-mode propagation of optical signals will be examined in this chapter. These structures have some unique properties that make their performance superior to that of multimode types. Eventually, this technology will emerge as a low-cost medium that will no doubt replace copper and multimode fiber-optic waveguides in signal transmission applications.
