Abstract
The rodents form a very large and varied group of mammals and are found all over the world wherever food is available. The order Rodentia contains three main sub-orders: the Hystricomorpha with porcupines and guinea pigs; the Scuriomorpha with squirrels and beavers; and the Myomorpha with mice, rats, hamsters and their allies. Pure ultrasounds have so far been found in only one of these sub-orders, the Myomorpha, and in only two families within this group. These are the family Muridae, which includes rats and mice and the family Cricetidae which includes hamsters, voles, gerbils and lemmings.
