William III and the Utrecht ‘Government-Regulation’: background, events and problems

Abstract

The surrender of the province of Utrecht to the king of France in June 1672 created an unclear situation. Had the province left the Union by signing such a capitulation? Irrespective of present or contemporary views of this question, it is certain that the relationship of the province to the Union was only clarified again some months after the end of the French occupation. After Louis XIVs troops had withdrawn (in November 1673) William III was invested, on 16 April 1674,1 with the title of stadholder of Utrecht, and a few days later the province was readmitted to the Union — the Union of Utrecht, that is!
