Abstract
This geographical analysis of pioneer settlement in Toledo represents an attempt to portray the significant elements of modern agricultural settlement in Latin America. The identification of these elements is meant to bring insight to the modern colonization process. Successful modern colonization depends primarily on two factors, the rapid adaption of settlers to the new areas, and the speed with which commercial agriculture is developed. These depend on the position of the colonization project, selection of settlers, method of land titling, settlement morphology, settlement size, and the role of settlement function in vertical integration and regional settlement development.
