Abstract
Figure 7.1 depicts a rough classification of the world in three ways: population density, areas of hunger, and the green belts. The hunger area is particularly interesting in that it is centered near the Equator in an area ranging from 10° south latitude to 30° north latitude. Population is also high in, but not confined to, this area. On the other hand, the “green belt” is a band from 30° to 55° latitude in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Unfortunately, most of this belt in the Southern Hemisphere is ocean. Thus, most of the grain production for human use is grown in the green belt of the Northern Hemisphere.
