The Search for Health: Nutritional Considerations

Food Nutrition and Health

Abstract

Recently, it was reported in the magazine Psychology Today that a “cultural hypochondria” is sweeping the country. They concluded that “... like so many Gatsbys in jogging suits, Americans are chasing an ideal of perfect health. Many of us, in fact, now spend more time thinking about our health than about love or money.” Obviously, this is a noble ideal, and, on the surface, personal responsibility for our own well being is a refreshing notion. Unfortunately, the end does not justify the means, since many consumers choose to jump at the slightest hint of a health benefit promised by any dietary manipulation that does not involve a major change in lifestyle. They want to know how food can make them stronger, happier, more creative, less prone to illness, and sexually capable, to a degree unheard of in most societies. That is, they want something that will prevent disease or work miracles with a minimum of effort. Who can blame them? This is an ideal we all would accept with open arms, but unfortunately life and health is not all that simple.
