Abstract

Each new technical advance in the understanding of health and disease has served to heighten the fear that man would one day come to view himself as a machine. So it was in the 17th century when William Harvey undertook his investigations of the human circulatory system. He published the results of his research many years after they had been completed in order to lessen their effect in placing human beings more in the proximity of the animal kingdom and further from the cherished view of ourselves as children of God.
