Abstract
The thyroid gland is one link in the neuroendocrine system known as the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Thyroid (HPT) axis [1–3]. Within this axis, circulating thyroid hormones are tightly regulated by both central nervous system input and peripheral feedback control. The hypothalamus secretes Thyrotropin Releasing Hormone (TRH) into the portal system of the adenohypophysis. TRH stimulates the pituitary thyrotrope cells to release Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), which in turn increases the rates of iodide uptake, hormone synthesis, and release of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
